It’s gotten insanely cold outside, and I’m feeling more and more like it’s impossible to dress well for a fancy night out. Although I love layering up for winter, my knack for pulling the most unexpected pieces together during the day doesn’t always work for dressier circumstances. I somehow managed to pull it off last month during Christmas. So, I wanted to round up my favorite dressy winter looks from Instagram, and share a few tips for striking the perfect balance of form and function when you’re feeling frozen.

Here are my best dressy winter looks, and how you can pull them off:

Sequin Rush

Can you guess what the easiest piece to wear is when you're not in the mood for accessorizing? A full-on sequin dress. I know I've covered sequins so many times this season already, but it truly is the life of a party whether you're wearing a full length gown or a cocktail midi. To brave the cold, be sure to work out your transportation situation so you're not left running around freezing. And don't forget a hefty fur coat to lock in warmth and keep it glam. If you must, add sheer black tights.

Lady in Red

There’s nothing like a mesmerizing red dress to make one’s heart skip a beat – and to cheer up the winter blues. This maxi one will keep your legs covered and boost your inner glow all the while enlivening the festive mood. No matter what the occasion is, you can ALWAYS rely on a red dress to channel relentless confidence with its uber sexy, attention-grabbing nature. Try a sizzling hot gown, a flirty piece, or a luscious midi.

When you have no other choice but to give into your basic black sweater dress, look for novel ways to turn it up a notch. Red tights added the finishing touch here. Remember that the trick to making colored tights look grown up is to wear it unapologetically. And you must ALWAYS wear heels. Also, avoid wearing them with coordinating holiday colors. For example, had my dress been green, this look would have been game over. I personally think that red tights look killer with neutrals or a monochrome look.

Red might be the hottest color of the season, but pink’s not dead – and it doesn’t have to be all out girly either. Just take a peek at this Insta outfit. It falls into my round up of dressy winter looks because it would appear equally striking with silver heels (even though I took the casual route of metallic sneakers). To pull off an all-pink look sans clueless vibes, mix in menswear pieces (like I did with the coat) and pick your proportions carefully. The long slinky skirt mixed with the oversized coat veered us away from the clueless domain.

Lucky Peach

Dress: (similar here and here) | Bag: WandlerHeels: AtticoEarrings: (similar Zimmerman)

Peach isn't an ideal color you'd expect to see in the winter, but my point is proven here that anything goes. Remember how pastels were trending massively in the winter time circa 2014? Well it's on the rise again, and you can make peach work by thinking of it as a pastel (especially the shade I'm wearing here). It's all about the fabric, silhouette, and accessories (try a fanny pack). Note that a dress with weight and shine can pass as evening appropriate. Something ankle-grazing with lots of flow also makes it more wearable in the winter.
